Years ago, I had left Vietnam, where I was born and ethnically belong to, to start anew in the States. At 12, the world was vast and unknown. Decades later, after earning degrees, I found myself drawn to a different path — one where language was the bridge between cultures and communities.
The Weight of Words in Court
As a court and conference interpreter, my days are filled with the weight of words. I translate testimonies, arguments, and judgments, striving for precision and empathy. Each case is unique, with its own story and stakes. I've interpreted for defendants accused of everything from minor infractions to serious felonies. I've seen the best and worst of humanity, and it's taught me to approach each case with sensitivity and professionalism.
Giving Voice in the Courtroom
In the courtroom, I become a conduit for those who don't speak the language. For defendants entitled to understand every word, I provide simultaneous interpretation, translating the proceedings in real-time. This way, they can follow the case closely and participate fully in their defense.
For witnesses, I use consecutive interpretation, translating their testimony after they've spoken. I take notes, ensuring their words are conveyed precisely, and helping the court understand their perspective.
Interpreting on the Global Stage
But courtroom drama isn't the only setting for my skills. I've also had the opportunity to work at high-stakes conferences around the world. I recall one summit in Paris, where I worked alongside a partner in a booth, interpreting for delegates discussing economic aid to developing countries. For 4 to 6 hours a day, I engaged in simultaneous interpretation, conveying complex ideas and nuanced discussions in real-time. The stakes were high, but the sense of accomplishment was greater.
Seeing world leaders and experts communicate effectively, bridging language gaps to find solutions, was truly inspiring.
A Commitment to Connection
Whether in a courtroom or a conference center, my goal remains the same: facilitating communication across languages. I've learned to navigate the intricacies of law, economics, and politics, always striving for accuracy and clarity.
My journey from Vietnam to the States has given me a unique perspective on the power of language. I've seen firsthand how it can unite people or create barriers. As an interpreter, I'm committed to breaking down those barriers, one conversation at a time.
