The Economic Implications of Solo Interpreting

While hiring a solo interpreter may appear to be a cost-effective solution, it can ultimately prove to be a false economy. Errors, omissions, or misinterpretations can have severe consequences, including mistrials, miscommunication, or incorrect diagnoses. The long-term costs associated with rectifying these mistakes can far exceed the short-term savings of hiring a solo interpreter.

Operational Dynamics of Team Interpreting

In a team interpreting setup, each interpreter plays a vital role. Typically, one interpreter assumes the lead role, actively interpreting the speaker's words, while the second interpreter provides support, monitoring the interpretation for accuracy and consistency. This collaborative approach enables interpreters to:

  1. Distribute the cognitive load, reducing fatigue and stress

  2. Provide mutual support and backup in case of complex or technical terminology

  3. Ensure consistency in terminology and style

  4. Take regular breaks, allowing for rest and rejuvenation

In complex international events or critical judicial settings, team interpreting is essential for ensuring high-quality interpretation. Each interpreter brings their expertise and knowledge to the table, working in tandem to deliver accurate and consistent interpretation that facilitates effective communication.

Go for Team

Team interpreting is a best practice that can mitigate human limitations and ensure optimal interpretation quality in high-stakes settings. The empirical evidence supports the benefits of team interpreting, and the economic implications of solo interpreting can be severe. As the demand for high-quality interpretation continues to grow, it is imperative to recognize team interpreting as a standard practice in the industry.
